The UAE climbed two spots to reach the 31 rank globally on the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2022.
It has also retained the top rank among Arab countries on the innovation index, published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) annually.
The country was ranked 33 on the index in 2021.
According to WIPO, the UAE ranked 18th globally on the GII’s innovation input sub-index this year, five ranks higher than 2021.
The sub-index categorises a country’s growing ability to transform investments in innovation-supporting inputs into tangible results that drive its development and global economic competitiveness.
The country, however, fared better on several indicators within this sub-index this year.
It came in 6th globally in the institutions indicator, 7th in the infrastructure indicator and 17th in the human capital and research indicator.
In market sophistication and business sophistication, the country’s ranking stood at 23 and 26, respectively.
In the GII sub-indicators, the UAE topped world countries in ‘cost of redundancy dismissal’, ‘business environment’, ‘entrepreneurship policies and culture’, ‘tertiary education’ and ‘tertiary inbound mobility’.
The Global Innovation Index is published by WIPO in partnership with the Portulans Institute to track the current state of innovation globally and rank the innovative performance of countries.
